Perfume That Doesn’t Cut the Mustard

After purchasing some perfume in May that I had been drooling over since I first rubbed it on myself from a magazine, I have made the decision to give it a negative review.

It pains me to do it. I really wanted this perfume to be right up there with my go-to scent, Premier Jour by Nina Ricci. (Aside: I have been told that this has been discontinued but I have not had a problem finding it online for years now.)

I adore perfume. I love having at least five or more different scents available to me year round so I can spray on some ‘extra personality’ for the day. I don’t go crazy or anything but wearing perfume definitely makes me feel more feminine and pretty, even when I’m not wearing makeup.

I ask for perfume every year for my birthday and at Christmas. I always have an on-going list. Nine times out of ten, I prefer an eau de parfum over an eau de toilette, since I prefer having more “scent” in my perfumes, enabling them to last longer. There are a handful of EDTs out there that are pretty solid, though.

However.

I can now officially name one EDP that I will strike from the Zoe Recommends list. And, it is definitely not worth $80+ (retail). In fact, I paid over $90 when I purchased this particular bottle when I was in Seattle.

The perfume in question is:

Narciso Rodriguez for her - eau de parfum

How pretty is the packaging? Would that the contents were worth this bottle!

The notes of this particular perfume are: pink pepper, lavender, patchouli, violet, amber, and woody accord. So very Zoe. It even has a pink smell, which is appropriate, considering the pink pepper and it’s beauteous glass bottle. I really love the hint of woods or musk. (Favorite musk perfume? Chance from Chanel. To die for.)

Unfortunately, despite the hefty price and it being an eau de parfum, this one doesn’t cut the mustard. I wanted it to so badly.

The perfume does not last. It goes on slightly heavier upon first spray but dissipates quickly. No matter how many sprays I get on to my left wrist – the one that emanates smell more out of my two wrists – no scent lingers at the end of the day. If I spray some on my neck and a little gets on my clothes, which is part of the point to perfume, the scent that remains on my shirt hardly even resembles the original.

It’s entirely too light and non-lasting for a very expensive bottle of perfume. It doesn’t match up to my mantra of “you get what you pay for.” And I really hate being wrong, but especially about something like that.

Last but not least, what I can’t get from this perfume I can get from Lovely by Sarah Jessica Parker. Which I already own!! The notes from Lovely are: amber, lavender, orchid, musk, and apple. Similar overtones and you would think that Lovely would smell lighter or not last as long but it beats out Narciso by a mile on both accounts.

To add insult to injury, so to speak, the sprayer for this bottle – at least mine – sucks. It takes entirely too much pressure to depress it for a single spray. I do like that it comes out in a nice, light mist. You aren’t doused. But because less is more when it comes to perfume, I still feel as if I have to pump the sprayer ten times to get any kind of decent scent. See photo below for the sprayer – nothing unusual.

As I’ve said, regardless of how much one sprays initially, the scent will not last. And it does go on quite prettily, I might add.

Sucky sprayer

I feel as if I’m saying something really controversial here, which is SO SILLY. There are infinitely more shocking and actual awful things in the world. But to read the reviews of this perfume (especially the ones who say the black bottle and pink box, the EDT), you would think that Narciso invented the sense of smell.

I’m sorry to say I am the whistleblower on this one: save your money and buy something else. Take my word for it.

  1. See, I took the super duper cheap route a while ago and bought the first pretty bottle I saw on the clearance shelf. It was Beyonce’s Heat, and I figured for $30 I could smell a little more diva. It was bootylicious in a bad way, making the general public sneeze in my presence! I might have to pay a little more, but- like you said- not too much, to get out of the stank zone 🙂

    • Hahahaha bootylicious in a bad way? It’s too bad that B put her name on a perfume that not only didn’t smell so great but could be sold on a clearance shelf. I agree – get thee out of that stank zone!

If you ever need any perfume recommendations, you know where to find me.

  2. What a relief that I came across your article! I just bought NR’s eau de parfum over the weekend and though I love, love, the scent, the longevity really sucks! At first I thought maybe it’s because I’m still not used to it yet, so probably my nose is playing tricks on me because I honestly cannot smell it on me! It’s like just 10 or 15 minutes after I sprayed and then poof! It’s gone! 😦 I can absolutely empathize with your review! I paid over 100 euros for the 100ml bottle but now I feel really disappointed! What’s strange though is that I first purchased NR’s delicate limited edition just before Summer, and though I didn’t go gaga over it, at the very least, the scent lasts longer! Especially when sprayed on clothes and I can’t understand it because Delicate is just an EDT, so it’s quite unfathomable why NR’s EDP would be this way! What a downer! It being a fake is just out of the question being that I bought it in one of the largest perfume store in Milan, (La Rinascente) so I’m bummed, really. 😦 could it be that it’s not compatible with my body chemistry? I’m confused because I have been reading reviews and some even attests that you only need to put like two or three sprays because it can get quite strong. This makes me really really disappointed. I wanted to love this perfume — the kind that I would gush about and recommend with friends, the kind that I couldn’t wait to buy another bottle again after it’s finished, that kind that would be one of my signature scents. 😦 I still can’t get myself over it. I’d probably try JP’s lovely instead.

    • I’m in total agreement. I have barely touched the bottle since I wrote this review. Occasionally, I wear the perfume and I enjoy the smell for all of half an hour before it totally wears off and I can never tell I sprayed perfume on at all. To me, that just defies the point. Sorry to hear you also wasted your money! I should write a review of ones that I LOVE and are totally worth the money!

  3. I have been using this parfume for years and never had a problem.
Actually, about 2 yrs ago I bought one from Craigslist being it was opened and used. Still explaining it was pretty full.
So I took the chance because I thought whoever is getting rid of it probably doesn’t agree with their body chemistry.
Well it was fake! How I found out was “TRUE IT DONT LAST LONG”
You spray and after about an hour it’s gone! The scent is the same but it doesn’t last.
All my bottles of Narciso Rodriguez have been the real parfume coming from department stores. I could spray from early morning till night time late it’s still in my flesh as strong in scent just like the morning spray.
Recently, last week this time coming from “Macy’s” I have a problem.
This time my daughter ordered it online or should I say made the call to order it direct from the perfum department.
Everything was set. It came in the mail.
For the whole week I’ve been wearing it and it just won’t last even an hour. At first I didn’t take notice because I’ve been to busy and tired. My new job I have I’m not allowed to overuse strong perfumes. I normally do 7 sprays all over NO MATTER WHAT FRAGRANCE I decide to use for that day.
Since I can’t go overboard with parfume I just spray lightly 4 sprays.
Got ready sprayed Narciso Rodriguez and off to work. This went on for 5 days till my off day.
Now, I’m on the 3rd day and paying attention that it’s not lasting not even an hour. Well, I call Macy’s and explain everything and they said sure come in bring your receipts and we’ll refund or exchange you another bottle.
    Simple as that!
Here’s the real problem. Where are we going to put our trust now! I mean Macy’s has the great reputation but now counterfeit is wiggling it’s way in to a famous well known name with a great reputation AND NOW with their high volume merchandise it will create K- OSS through out all Macy’s.
It’s not fair to Macy’s and especially to us customers.
I mean, I will have the advantage to exchange in hopes to the real parfume bottle BUT THE BIGGER PUCTURE IS
The hassle we go through waiting for our purchase, taking it home and 😩 BANG you find out it’s a fake❗️
It’s not our fault, it’s not Macy’s fault (or better yet Macy’s needs to put a tighter SECURITY) whatever, time is involved, INJUSTICE …….. We live in world of creepy counterfeiters!!!
